To ancient philosophers, quintessence was the fifth element that permeated everything. Though our understanding of the elements has changed in the centuries since, our definition of the word has remained remarkably the same. Still, we seek to understand what it is that shapes our universe, that gives us life, that gives life its meaning.
Science and art are often positioned as opposites, but to me they are intrinsically connected, both humanity's answer to the same question: Why?
Analogue photography is equal parts art and equal parts science.
As a chemist, I'm fascinated by the chemical aspects and possibilities of film, from the composition of the emulsion to developing and enlarging techniques. The opportunities for experimentation are endless, and through this I aim to create unique images by the manipulation of light rather than software. As an artist, I want to take photos that describe the emotions and experiences of life that cannot be sufficiently summed up in words.
Like the philosophers of old, I believe that quintessence is everywhere, flowing through us and the universe of which we're a part. My goal, through my photography, is to capture it.
